The United States is set to boost funding for the removal of cluster bombs and other unexploded ordnance in Laos, the fatal legacies of its “secret war” during the 1960s and 1970s.
Deaths and injuries from unexploded ordnance, or UXO, have decreased dramatically over the past few years as the US has scaled up funding for clearance. Casualties fell from 302 in 2008 to 40 in 2015, according to the Laos government’s National Regulatory Authority for UXO/Mine Action. Between January and March this year, there were just two recorded incidents.
