The Cambodian Mine Action Center has a privilege and honor to inform that on the 9th October 2015, at 15:00 at CMAC Phnom Penh Headquarters, the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) and the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) is to sign a Partnership Cooperation Agreement to implement the project "Clearance of Explosive Remnants of War in East Cambodia"

This project receives grant assistance from the Government of the United States through the U.S. Department of State (DOS) through the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (PM/WRA) of the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs. The Grant with total amount of US$ 2,500,000 (two millions and five hundred thousand dollars) for 13 month period from 1st October 2015 to 31 October 2016. Objectives of Project: The project is to focus on creating a safe living environment for affected communities by returning safe land back to the beneficiaries at village level and contribute to improve public safety.

Brief Background of Project: The impact on people and the need for effective clearance of land contaminated from ERW in East Cambodia remain high. At the same time, the remaining scope of the problem from unexploded ERW in East Cambodia is still not clear because the base line survey has not been completed.

The Department of States through the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (PM/WRA) of the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs has been assisting Cambodia in developing an effective national mine action capacity, restoring access to land and infrastructure, and reducing casualties from mines and ERW.

From mid 1960s until late 1998 Cambodia was affected by internal and regional conflicts that have left behind a huge legacy of landmines, cluster munitions and other ERW. The Northwest region of Cambodia bordering with Thailand is heavily affected by landmines and other ERW contamination. The Eastern region of the country is mainly affected by aerial bombardment as a result of the US-Vietnam war, leaving large areas contaminated by cluster munitions and other ERW. Most of the ERW found in East Cambodia are of US origin.
