KABUL, AFGHANISTAN - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a new $30 million program to provide immediate and tailored support to victims of conflict.
The three-year Afghan Civilian Assistance Program (ACAP) III provides humanitarian assistance to innocent civilians who have suffered losses and injuries resulting from ongoing insurgency or remnants of conflict. This includes incidents resulting from unexploded mines, munitions and other hazards.
The program will be implemented by the United Nations Mine Action Service in cooperation with the Mine Action Coordination Centre for Afghanistan. The Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs, and Disabled and a network of Afghan governmental and non-governmental organizations will be engaged in the provision of victim support.
The program’s main goals are to: 1) provide immediate medical and other non-monetary assistance tailored to meet victim’s needs; 2) train government ministries and institutions mandated to aid war victims to better meet the needs of those affected by conflict; and 3) enhance public awareness and advocacy efforts.
This is the third installment of ongoing U.S. support for Victim’s Assistance since 2007.
ACAP III builds upon mechanisms developed under the previous two initiatives, which have supported more than 13,500 families since their inception.
